IN the garage and workshop there are many uses for small stationary engines ; air compressors, lifts, paintspraying plants and washing machines require power, to mention just a few of the more common instances. To meet this need B.E.N. Patents, Ltd., 92, Tottenham Court Road, London, W.1, has recently introduced the B. and S. range of four-stroke-cycle power units.
There are three types produced ; model S (1 h.p.) costs £14 10s., model AI (11 h.p.) £19 10s., and model It (2i3 h.p.) £23 10s. The respective weights are 65 lb., 70 lb. and 110 lb. The smallest pattern has a bore and stroke of 21 ins., the same dimensions applying to model M; type It has a bore of 21 ins, and a stroke of 31 ins. Crankshaft-speed ranges vary slightly. The smallest engine runs from 1,800 r.p.m. to 2,200 r.p.m.; model M runs from 1,800 r.p.m. to 2,400 r.p.m., and the largest one from 1,600 r.p.m. to 2,200 r.p.m.
All engines are of the air-cooled, single-cylindered pattern and have pumpand-trough lubrication systems and L-type cylinder heads with offset sparking plugs. In each case ignition is by means of a flywheel magneto ; the flywheel also incorporates a fan which delivers air to the cylinder walls. Models S and M have a pedal starter, hand starting being provided on the largest engine. A controllable governor regulates the running speed of the crankshaft. An air cleaner and silencer are standard equipment on each type.
Fuel is supplied from a tank mounted on the engine. Type S will run for two hours, type Ad for four hours, and type R for three hours on full load without need for replenishment. These engines are stoutly constructed and are finished with a heat-resisting black enamel.
