THIS WEEK'S FRANKFURT Motor Show will feature the unveiling of passenger cars from Renault and Volkswagen, giving strong clues as to the van derivatives the two manufacturers are expected to launch in Amsterdam next month.

The all-new Renault Kangoo begins its launch at Frankfurt in the MPV format, which accounts for 50% of all Kangoo sales.

Now built on the Scenic plat form (the old Kan goo was based on the Clio), the Kangoo has a wi d e rwhee I track, improved cargo space and handling. The range is much more diverse than previously with the promise of more wheelbase and body size options.

All engines are carried over from the pre vious range with a choice 68, 86 and 105hp diesels. The interior is given a thorough makeover, with the gearshift now mounted on the dash. following the industry norm.

The Volkswagen Caddy Life is the passenger version of the Caddy van which is not widely seen in the UK. The newcomer is a lengthened version, the Caddy Life Maxi.

Some 150mm of the increase comes from its rear overhang, with another 320mm from thr: wheelbase. The other Caddy news is that the current model will be available this autumn with the 140 TDI engine, delivering 138hp/320Nm.
