Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

ACTROS vs AX011— V6 or straight 6?

UK truck buyers have never taken to V-engines with any great enthusiasm, leaving Mercedes and Scania to plough a fairly lonely furrow with them up until now. However, with the launch of the Axor Mere tractor buyers get the option of an In-line six, which according to DC promises outstanding fuel economy along with high power and torque, for a lower weight.

Although some operators might be surprised by the decision to fit a ninespeed box as standard at a time when rivals are pushing 12 or more ratios in their fleet offerings, DalmlerChrysier has matched the 0•457's torque curve closely to the dine-speed box, so it shoukl provide the same driveability as an equivalent Actros with a 16-speed.

And Albert Flolho, DC's director of development for heavy-duty engines, reports that the 0•457 also offers slightly higher max torque ratings compared to a 400hp V6 Actros, along with a higher-rated speed.

To clear the Euro-3 emission hurdle, the 0•457 has got slightly lower injection pressures (down from 1,800 to 1,700 bar) and six—rather than eight-hole injectors. Its turbocharger has also been reprofiled to give better low-engine-speed airflow. However, despite the changes, Flotho insists that "in driving the Axor there is no fuel penalty, Euro-2 vs Euro-3".

The 01445T5 mid-mounted cam drives identical electronically controlled unit injector pumps, as in the 500 Series V engines. The engine's compact design Includes an oil filter/cooler module on top to allow easy servicing from above.

The air compressor also features a "power reduction system", so when you don't need the air supply topped up, a valve will open to cut back pressure so that you don't get parasitic power loss. Finally, a planetary geardrive starter motor delivers improved cold starting behaviour and increased durability.
