11 The result of a postal ballot of 470 employees at Cheshire-based logistics firm James Ham & Sons to recognise the United Road Transport Union will be known on 17 September.
The ballot is the first formal recognition procedure in the road transport sector to be decided in this way.
If more than 40% of the employees entitled to vote, primarily HGV drivers, vote In favour of recognition the URTU will represent them in future negotiations on pay, hours and holiday entitlement Under the Employment Relations Act, introduced into the UK on 8 June 2000, a union can apply for recognised status under a procedure supervised by the Central Arbitration Committee.
James Ham & Sons has declined to make any comment until after the ballot result.
