SIR TERENCE BECKETT is leaving his £85,000 a year job as Ford's British chairman and managing director to become director general of the Confederation of British Industry.

Sir Terence, who succeeds the late Sir John Methven, has been with Ford for 30 years. He has been a British director for 15 years, managing director for seven years, and has additionally been chairman for the last five years.

He moves to the CBI on October 1, and has been succeeded at Ford by director of sales Sam Toy.

TNT has made three senior management appointments for its new Overnite express parcels delivery service. General manager, Alan Jones joins Overnite after more than three years as regional director of Roadline UK. Mr Jones has been in the transport industry for seven years. Previously a manager with National Carriers, John Everett will take over as national sales manager with responsibility for business development. Finally, Bob Mattinson is Overnite's new national operations manager who transfers from Inter County Express where he has had a total of nine years' service in various capacities.

Robert Russett of Premier Transport, Bristol, is following in his father's footsteps. Harold, who is national vice-chairman of RHA, finds Robert as chairman of the RHA's Young Executive Section, vice-chairman of the Bristol and District Sub-Area, and a member of the RHA Road Show Committee organising the event for 1981 in Bristol.

Peter Friend has taken up duties as transport manager with Elmbridge Borough Council. Mr Friend worked in the motor vehicle repair business in Canada and the United States before setting up his own motor vehicle repair operation in this country. The CAST Group has named Tom Lord as president of CAST Europe NV. Based in Antwerp, CAST Europe NV is the Group's container operating company in Europe. Mr Lord moves back to Europe after a spell as president of CAST North America Ltd, the company's container operating company for Canada and the United States. He joined the Group in 1969 which was the year it was formed.

The following have been elected to the TUC's non-rail transport group: Moss Evans (11.44m votes); Walter Greendale (10.96m); Stan Pemberton (10.83m); Larry Smith (10.41m); and Jim Slater (11.51m). Mr Slater is a member of the National Union of Seamen, while the four other members of the group belong to the Transport and General Workers' Union.

Appointed to the board of Atkinson's of Clitheroe as technical director is Jeffrey Cowling. In his new job he will be responsible for design, development, inspection and quality control on Atkinson's range of agricultural spreaders, road rollers, gritters and snowploughs. Mr Cowling joined Atkinson's last year from I. and K. Engineering Ltd of Ingham, Lincolnshire. Prior to that he worked for Ruston Bucyrus, British Ropes in Johannesburg, and Rolls-Royce.

L. Gardner and Sons has expanded its service organisation, with Neil Peterson taking over as general service manager. Sam Jones is the new technical service manager and Edward Rayner becomes field service and claims manager. In addition, the company has named three regional field engineers: Norman Jones will be based at Patricroft, John Adair at Glasgow, and John Heady at East Molesey.

Newly appointed as product sales manager for WadhamStringer Victory Ltd, Portsmouth, is Mike Brown. Prior to joining WadhamStringer he worked for Hunter Vehicles in North London and before that worked for various companies including Tesco Stores where he was study engineer on transport and distribution.

Obituary

We record with regret the death of William Smith, managing director of Pickfords Heavy Haulage, since 1971.

Mr Smith (53), was found with shotgun wounds by a passing motorist in Wormley near Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire. Hertford police are investigating and say foul play is not suspected.
