NEWS IN BRIEF

Results; The Lep Group last year had uss surplus of £967,967 (E926,312 in hut after higher depreciation and tax net balance was lower than in 1961, ; £257,329. A Opening: Mr. Raymond W. Birch, man of Eddison Plant Ltd.. was among : present at the official opening of the )any's new depot and Scottish headters in Glasgow. the opening ceremony performed by Mr. James Alton. viceener of Lanarkshire County Council. UAVING arrived here in "something

new from Ford, Dagenham ", about which nothing can be said at this stage, my visit to the Frankfurt Motor Show this morning indicated that there will be numerous new designs of goods and passenger vehicle on display when the Show is officially opened tomorrow. Already it is clear that the number of important new German models will be greater than ever this year.

Unfortunately, Great Britain's representation is thin again, with the most important news in this connection being the sales link-up between Henschel and Commer (see page 47). The German concern, which has now severed its affiliation with Saviem and ceased passenger-vehicle production also, is displaying Commer vehicles on its stand, these bearing " Henschel-Commer " name badges, and it will be interesting to see what sales progress is made with Commer models in this territory: certainly this

B.R.S. Swindon NEXT Monday, September 16, a new depot will be opened at Swindon by B.R.S. (Parcels) Ltd. Until now, services in the Swindon area have been operated from Oxford, Reading or Bristol but the new branch will provide improved collection and delivery in a rapidly developing area.

Built in only 15 weeks at a cost of £130,000, the depot will initially operate only six vehicles but the 120-ft. loading bank provides room for many more. The completely enclosed depot has a new type of arched steel roof with 165-ft. span.

The address of the new branch is Green Bridge Industrial Estate, Stratton St. Margaret, Swindon (Swindon 21382). can only be the start of further liaison between British and German makers.

Among the new German designs on show is the long-awaited Mercedes-Benz 16/19-ton-gross forward-control goods model, this being a heavy-duty type with vertical, under-cab engine, making for a high but reasonably unobstructed floor line. Krupp display a Cummins-engined vehicle for the first time, whilst new products are featured also by German Ford and M.A.N. (as detailed last week), Bussing, Kliackner Humboldt Deutz, Tempo and Volkswagen. On the passenger side an interesting newcomer is the Kassbohrer Setra S125 low-floor crushload single-decker, the floor height of which is about 2 ft. above ground level in the area of the front entrance.

All in all, the. 1963 Show promises to live up to the reputation of previous Frankfurt exhibitions in featuring endless technical novelties and suggesting design trends. A fully illustrated report will be published in next week's issue and the Show closes on the following Sunday.

Channel Tunnel Debate ?

From Our Political Correspondent 'THE British Government's reaction to 1 the Anglo-French study of a possible new Channel link, to be published next week, is to be reserved until Parliament returns later this year.

As final arrangements for publication were being made this week, it was understood that Ministers favoured a debate to collect the views of M.P.s before making any announcement of the Cabinet's attitude.

It might be possible to have a clearcut statement of the official position before Christmas, but probably net earlier.
