Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

The Latest Returns Show Distinct Gains ,in.' Both Goods ,and Hackney Divisions. Details of Outstanding Licensing Changes AFIER the drop of over 1,000 which occurred in the registration of new motor vehicles in June last, it is pleasing to note that the July figures make a much more satisfactory showing, the total of 35,937 being 6,042 above the comparable return for July, 1934. There were satisfactory advances both M -goods vehicles and hackneys," the former increasing from 5,367 to 5,843

and the latter from 469 to 774, .

The number of new petrol goods vehicles registered was 5,525 in July last, compared with 5,034 a year earlier, the most marked increases being. in the classes for vehicles not exceeding 12 cwt. and the 2-21-toimers, the figure for the .former being, 1,005 and comparing with, ,,7S8 a year ago; and the latter, at 1,543, Contrasting

with 1,142 for JUly, 1934. .

In the .12-cwt.-I-ton class there was a slight falling off, the total being just above the 700 mark; likewise in the 1i-2-ton division a fall of 157 was recorded, bringing the total down to 1,242. The changes in the other categories in the petrol goods class were relatively unimportant. No petrol goods vehicles were registered in classes above the 9-ton limit.

Popular Types of Oiler.

-Once again a slight falling off was recorded in oil-engined goods vehicles, this year's total of 131 having to be set against 143 for July, 1934. The chief registrations continue to occur in the 3-4-ton and 4-5-ton sections-51 in the former and 37 in the latter, the remaining 43 registrations taking place in five other divisions. There were no oil-engined goods vehicles registered in the classes above the 8-tonner. Of the oilers registered in July last, 32 were licensed for draeiing trailers, as against 30 a, year ago.

A few more vehicles were registered than of late in the class for steamers,

the total of 6 being the same as that for last year, -whilst an unusual feature was the licensing. 'of • a 2-4-tonner for operation opec:-Oal gas. The electric' vehicle continues to kci' ahead, and just over half of the. total registrations (70) of this . tyrie were recorded in the section for vehicles not exceeding 12 cwt. In fact, all but 4 of the eleetrice did not exceed 1-ton unladen weight; the total of last year's electric-vehicle registrations was 34.

The total for goods vehicles in.. eludes70 rigid six-wheelers and 93 of the articulated pattern, figures which contrast with 152 and 60 respectively a year ago. It is rather surprising to note the marked fall in rigid sixwheelers and the improvement in the articulated type; 61 of the latter were

3-4-tonners. In July last 15 eightwheelers were licensed, as against 8 a year ago. In the categories for agricultural vans and lorries there were 99 registrations, compared with 80 in . July, 1934, and; once again, they were all in the petrol-engined

More Oil-engined Hackneys,

The improvement in hackney-vehicle registrations was largely breffight abbut by the increase in oilers, this year's total of 305 being more than double that for July, 1934. Most of the registrations (118) occurred in the 48-56seater category, but good returns were also recorded in the 26-32-seater, 32-40-; seater and 40-48-seater sections. There was also a good rise in the division for petrol hackneys—from 299 to 444—but in this instance it was mainly brought about by the advance in taxicabs from 62 to 178. A feature, however, was the advance in the 26-32-seater class from 41 to DI, and a drop in the 48-56-seater class from 55 to 5. The registrations Of trolleybuses totalled 25, last year's figure being 19.

A total of 64 tractors was registered, 38 being agricultural and 25 for general-haulage service; the total last year was 42. The aggregate returns for the seven months ended July last show that 41,218 goods vehicles and 4,902 hackney vehicles were registered, the corresponding' figures for last year being 41,120 and 3,331 respectively.
