Do you care about the wellbeing of your staff?

Our new regular columnist John Horton, of Focale Training, airs his view on looking after the health of your employees How many of us care for our employees? How many of us look after our own health? Are we working as a team?

It’s time the industry looked after its people and cared for their stress levels and diet and created an environment where all employees work together as a team instead of a them-versus-us attitude.

Prime Minister David Cameron believes: “The government has the power to improve wellbeing.” I think we have the same power and should be responsible enough to include this in our training. We must never forget that driving is a very stressful, hazardous occupation. It is estimated that the average driver makes 40 decisions every two minutes. With such responsibility placed on our drivers every day, their wellbeing must be taken more seriously by everyone.

How many employees are worried about their future? Do employees feel valued by their employer? Are we the authors of our own destiny? It’s not going to get any easier with rising costs, particularly fuel and a shortage of skilled operatives. What are we doing about improving our workforce and retaining key staff?

It is essential that we plan for employee training and development – while maximising turnover and reducing costs – and develop a strategy for working together.

Everyone should know what is expected of them and have a plan to develop and improve their performance. That’s right, we have to develop our staff or they will go elsewhere! Are you doing your bit?
