The light CV sector is facing a supply black hole in the coming years, according to British Car Auctions

Words: Kevin Swallow

THERE IS A BLACK hole facing the light CV sector when it comes to supply over the coming years, according to a used car market report published by BCA and written by Professor Peter Cooke.

With annual light CV registrations falling sharply from a record 338,000 units in 2007 to 186,000 in 2009, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, Cooke estimates that around 275,000 light CVs will be ‘missing’ from the used vehicle supply line between 2011 and 2015.

This could have a direct effect on the biggest buyers of used CVs – small businesses, partnerships and sole traders – as well as the wholesale and retail van trade, which could ind it dificult to source good quality used stock. “If dealers are unable to source the type of units they have traditionally handled, it may be necessary to work with older vehicles,” says Cooke.

The average age of light CVs will rise as fewer new vans have been sold, and the van parc will remain around 3.5 million units for the next few years. ■
