Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Officials from Ilk \ 1 inistry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Foods are considering a proposal from a new operator to ferry live animals from Shoreham to Dieppe. Slough-based MT Shipping has already announced plans for a livestock service from Harwich to Boulogne.

MAFF officials have already inspected the ship of another operator, Meridian, which this week withdrew its proposal to offer a Folkestone-Boulogne livestock service.

MT Shipping hopes to fill the gap left by ferry operators such as P&O which have abandoned livestock movements on passenger ferries following a campaign by animal rights organisations.

MAFF has also inspected an aircraft as part of proposals to airlift cattle for fattening from Humberside to Hull.

While MAFF does not provide shipping operators with licences, it has to be satisfied the animals are travelling in acceptable conditions.
