NOW is the time to enrol for the CM Special Offer courses for the Certificates of Professional Competence in either road haulage or public service vehicles.

In association with Road Transport Correspondence Courses of Esher, Surrey, CM offers readers the chance to prepare for these examinations with the aid of comprehensive home study packs. The packs cover the entire syllabus, no additional reading matter is required and no written work is involved.

The Royal Society of Arts examinations, which are held four times a year, consist of multiple-choice type questions and each pack contains a wide selection of questions similar to those asked in the examinations. The easy-to-read packs are divided into sections corresponding with the sections of the syllabus and there are self-assessment questions at the end of each section with the answers at the end of the module to enable students to monitor their progress through the course.

Also included in the packs are two mock examinations for students to attempt on completion of the course, which will be marked and assessed by one of the two experienced course tutors Eddie Pargeter and Frank Lewsey (Witney 3481) who are always available for consultation.

The Certificate of Professional Competence is an essential qualification which you must have before you can apply for an operator's licence. It should also be borne in mind that the Licensing Authorities require at least nine weeks' notice to enable the application to be processed. Transport operators are required by law to have at least one CPC holder in their full-time employ at each operating centre. Should the CPC holder leave or retire, the operator's licence is immediately endangered and all operators should ensure that there is always at least one stand-by CPC holder at each operating centre in case of emergencies.

The CPC is also an important qualification for any ambitious employee to achieve and success in the next exam could secure early promotion!

Home study packs are available for the Goods National and International and the PSV National examinations at the following prices: Goods National £93 or 3 payments of £31 Goods International £69 or 2 payments of £36 PSV National £108 or 3 payments of £36
