RATHER than raise the old-age pensioners' concessionary fare on Glasgow municipal transport services from 2d to 3d the majority Labour group on Glasgow Corporation has decided that a further £100,000 should be provided from the rates.

This was agreed by the group when it considered the alternatives put forward by the Scottish Traffic Commissioners—that the deficit be met either by raising the fare or by an additional allocation from the rates.

An extra £100,000 would increase the total rates contribution to meet the deficit on the concession to £350,000 a year.

Councillor W. L. Taylor said the extra £100,000 would mean the city treasurer would have to find about id in the £1 more in rates, bringing the total for the concession to about 3d in the £1.

He explained: "We felt it was easier that everyone should make a contribution than that the people who get the benefit of the concession fares and are less able to bear a further increase should carry it themselves. We thought the spread of this throughout the whole city meant that the individual burden anyone was carrying was very small indeed."

Councillor Donald R. Liddle, leader of the opposition group, said: "Old-age pensioners are so delighted with the concession ticket that! think none of them would grudge an additional penny nor think a 3d ticket too much for them to meet. I am not at all in favour of the rates contribution being further increased".
