It covers almost all of Greater London and targets emissions of (primarily) particulates from older dieselengined lorries, buses, coaches, vans, minibuses and other heavy vehicles that are derived from lorries and vans such as motor caravans and motorised horse boxes.
Phase one, for diesel trucks of more than 12 tomes, started in February, and, according to Transport for London (If L, almost all vehicles driving in the zone now meet Euro-3 emissions standard or better.
Diesel lorries of more than 3.5 tonnes now have to comply with the London Low Emission Zone (LEZ) as phase two of If Ls scheme was rolled out in July.
The phased introduction of the scheme will continue through to January 2012.
Different vehicles will be affected over time, and increasingly tougher emissions standards will apply.
