Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

By Joanna Bourke THE NEED FOR truck mechanics is on the rise following the implementation of Euro-5 emissions limits.

Since the Euro-5 emissions standards came into effect for new type-approved trucks on 1 October, the need for specialist CV mechanics is now greater than ever. This was the message from the Oaf National Dealer Apprenticeship of the Year awards.

According to Stuart Jones, test verifier for Skillnet, the automotive training firm that co-ordinates the apprenticeship scheme on behalf of Daf trucks, mechanics will now need to learn more complex skills to cope with the demands of new engines.

Speaking at the event, he said: "With emissions rules tightening, the technology involved is going to get harder. Operators will have to rely on this knowledge."

With S.killnet managing 53% of the UK's HOV mechanic apprentice schemes, chief executive Lee Acton has no fear of numbers declining. He tells CM he predicts the group's turnover will rise from Um in March 2008 to fl Om by March 2009.

Trevor Platups, managing director of the North London Garage Group, is more sceptical, saying firms will have to watch their headcount. He agrees, though, that the industry needs competent mechanics on board to cope with the new demands.
