Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THERE WERE nearly 40% fewer trains going through the Channel Tunnel in October compared with last year's monthly average, says Eurotunnel.

However, a Eurotunnel spokesman says the number of trucks going through the tunnel remains "our biggest business". It does not publish truck figures for October (it publishes figures quarterly), but up to the end of September its shuttles carried slightly more trucks than in 2007 — 1.53 million against 1.51 million. The decline in total services through the tunnel is down to fewer passenger shuttles and Eurostar services.

In a statement. the tunnel operator adds: "The shuttle services have achieved record load factors, in particular for the truck shuttle service, which for the month of October had a load factor of 90% (compared to 70% for 2007)."

Despite the fall, Eurotunnel was upbeat about the figures, arguing that last year was "exceptional" in terms of demand. Services this year have also been down because of the recent Channel Tunnel fire.
