require a mobile crane driver to hold an HGV licence from 1 January 1998 make no concession as to the driver's eyesight. He will have to meet the same standards as any other HGV driver, regardless of how long or safely he has been driving a mobile crane. There are no "grandfather rights".
However, the requirement to hold an HGV licence may be postponed until 1 January 1999 due to pressure from the crane industry. The UVLA will announce this soon.
