Electric Leo computers are now working out new routes, for the 2.000 I uel delivery tankers of Shell Mex-BP. This reappraisal was Started recently with the object of determining the appropriateness of a standard computer programme to this particular type of delivery work. In contrast with regular replenishment of commodity warehouses or delivery to shops on fixed rounds and days, the delivery of petrol to customers by tanker presents no fixed pattern, with amounts, frequency and location of deliveries varying.

The use of computers to solve transport problems is no longer rare and its value has been established where some discernible pattern of operation exists. In this exercise, which is still continuing. the objective is to evaluate the work of the computer when conditions change completely from day to day; also to determine whether worth-while improvements. can nevertheless be achieved.
