A 5-tonner Weighing Under tons Unladen, and a 4-tonner in the same Taxation Class rAN the eve of the Scottish Show, the 1.-/Vulcan Motor and Engineering Co., Ltd., Southport, announced the addition to its range of goods chassis of two new models, rated at 5 tons and 4 tons respectively. These are both within the 30 m.p.h. limit, weighing unladen, in the one case, 50 cwt. and, in the other, 481 cwt.

The larger is a forward-control machine and is available with a 9-ft. 91-in, wheelbase or with this dimension increased to 11 ft. 41 ins. The smaller chassis is offered with either normal or forward control, the wheelbase figures being (normal) 11 ft. 111 inL or 13 ft., or (forward) 9 ft. 91 ins. or 11 ft. 3 ins.

Considering first model 5VF, the 5tonner, this is powered by a four-cylindered, 4.398-litre petrol 'engine, having cylinder dimensions of 100 inn]. by 140 mm. rated at 24.8 h.p., and developing 76 b.h.p. at 2.850 r.p.m. Notable features of the engine are the use of separate cylinder-block and crankcase castings, the former being of chromealloy iron and the latter of aluminium, with the joint line well below the axis of the crankshaft. The last-named'is c34 of high-tensile nickel steel and is statically and dynamically balanced.

Masked inlet valves are used, whilst the exhaust valves have Stellite-faced seatings. Mixture is supplied by a Zenith down-draught carburetter and ignition is by magneto.

Behind the power unit is a singledry-plate clutch, and a unit-mounted gearbox affording overall ratios of 6.5, 12.6, 20.6 and 35.9 to 1 forward and 56.5 to 1 reverse, Thence power is taken by a two-piece propeller shaft to an overhead-worm-type rear axle with fully floating half-shafts.

Of 35-ton steel, the straight frame members measure, at their points of maximum section, 7i ins. by 21 ins. and are braced by five channel crossmembers, these being riveted in position. At the front, springs meastning 42 ins. by 21 ins, are used, the length and width of those at the rear being 52 ins. and 3 ins. The elliptical petrol tank holds 20 gallons.

Stebring gear is of the Marles type, retardation is afforded by vacuumservo brakes and the wheels are generously equipped with 34 by 7 heavy-duty straight-sided tyres—twins at the rear.

A maximum body space of 12 ft. 7 ins, is provided on the short model, and 14 ft, 94 ins. on the long machine, whilst the frame height is 2 ft. 5 ins.

Resembling the bigger chassis in general layout and equipment, the 4tonners-4VN and 4VF.—have a 3.909litre engine, with a bore and stroke of 95 mm. and 140. mm. This unit is rated at 22.4 lep. and gives 98 b.h.p.

Except for the smaller engine .the chassis is practically the same until we come to the frame depth which is 7 ins. Another difference is found in the tyre equipment, the size.being 32 by 6.

On the normal-control model the two maximum body lengths are 11. ft. 91 ins., and 13 ft. al ins. When forward control is adopted, ;are coriespending "distances are .12 ft. 7 ins, and

14 ft. 74 respectively.'
