fruit, unless delivery could' be. effected the following morning, was an argument put forward on behalf of Messrs j E. Kirby and Son, of Yfartham, when they applied for a modification to enable them to carry' farm produce and fruit for Mr. W... Bracey; of Martham, 'farther afield to' various fruit preservers. The application was heard before the Eastern Licensing Authority, Sir Haviland Hiley, at Norwich, last week.

, Mr. Bracey said that he supplied fruit to factories. at Slough and other places, as well as to fruit preservers as far away as Huddersfield and Leeds. Up to two years ago, he said, the fruit was sent by rail, but he was then asked to consign by road. Had he continued to send the fruit by rail he would have' lost the orders.

Sir Haviland Riley asked whether it was really a question of speed of transport or of rates? Mr. Bracey replied that, whilst rates were of certain importance, speedy transport was essential. He added that it was necessary to load up to 8 p.m. and even 10 p.m. Fruit picking continued until dark, and the loading was done afterwards by artificial light. • The railway could not accept delivery so late, Sir Haviland Hiley said that he considered the application was reasonable, and it would be granted.
