12-Journey Tickets

STRONG criticism of the L.N.E. Railway Co. was voiced, last week, when the 12-journey bus-ticket inquii y was resumed, at Newcastle, before the Northern Traffic Commissioners.

Mr. W. McKeag, . representing 31 public authorities, declared that the conditions which the railway company had submitted for regulating the use of these tickets were absurd. He described the company as the "petted, pampered darling of the legislature."

Denying that the company had proved systematic abuse, he also asserted that the L.N.E.R. had failed to show that the railway revenue had been adversely affected. These cheap bus tickets, he pointed out, were something vital in the budgets of thousands of homes in that area.

Mr. J. Petrie, late general manager of the Northern General Transport Co., Ltd., in his evidence, declared : " We are not going to be dictated to by the railway." He said that it would probably be found that the abuse of rail tickets far exceeded the abuse of bus tickets.

Last Friday, when the hearing was adjourned until December 2, Mr. McKeag protested against the manner in which, he declared, the L.N.E.R. was prolonging the inquiry. It was, he asserted, costing 1300 a day.

Mr. Merritt refuted the allegation.

Originally, the railway company asked for the abolition of 12-journey tickets, but that is no longer an issue, the railway proposals now being for the better regulation of the system..

Practically all the road-service interests in the area are being represented at the inquiry by Mr. E. S. Herbert, and the railway representative is Mr. E. P. Merritt. Three days were set aside for this week's proceedings.
