Germans trial LHVs

THE GERMAN FEDERAL government has announced it will begin trials of longer and heavier vehicles on domestic routes, probably next year.

A proposal to run the vehicles with a gross weight of 60 tonnes has been dropped to 44 tonnes, however the Road Haulage Association (RHA) says the issue is about length rather than weight.

RHA head of international affairs Peter Cullum says: "We don't carry

a lot of heavy stuff these days. You bulk up before you weight out."

Cullum says Germany's decision, which could see the longer vehicles on its roads in January, is unlikely to prompt a change of heart in the UK.

He adds: "Anyone who gets into power will have a pretty thin majority and this wit not be an issue they will be rushing to adopt. It oak] yield a lot more pain than gain. It's a very emotive subject, quite visceral."
