Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Mitsubishi reckons its hard working pickups drive like luxury cars, but they are also tough, powerful workhorses. If an L200 can win its class of the Dakar Rally it should be able to withstand the rigours of runs onto building sites

The L2004WD has dominated the competition in recent years — off road, on road, at work, at weekends and across some of the toughest terrain on the planet. It was the first pickup to cross the line in the Dakar Rally this year, the motoring world's most gruelling test of auto endurance.

The launch of the new L200 Club Cab is designed to give buyers the best of both worlds — a rear bench seat and secure storage plus an extra long bed length. Sitting neatly between existing Single and Double Cab versions, the new L200 Club Cab 4WD is equally at home cruising the highways or exploring the wilderness. But with its extra-long cargo bed the Club Cab is ready, willing and able to handle the toughest on or off-road jobs.

Even with this jumbo load capacity the Club Cab has the roomiest interior in its class, with bags of leg, shoulder and hip room for the whole crew with comfortable saloon-like standards of interior appointment. Mitsubishi produces the UK's largest 4WD range and last year almost half of all pickups sold in this country were Mitsubishi L200s. This new L200 further stretches the model range and the payload capacity.

But what's it like? From outside the L200 Club Cab sits up high on its thumping great tyres with big and beefy good looks and a presence that just about everyone will want to make way for. At the rear that extra-long loadbed seems to stretch on and on and is able to handle most loads you are likely to throw at it.

For the figure conscious it measures 1,830x1470x400mm with a gross load capacity of 1,110kg. Don't forget that you can add optional liners, tonneau cover or full box to give the cover and security you need. But it's after climbing up into the cab — and it is a climb to reach L200's towering driving position — that the real surprises become evident. First, it feels like a car.The inside is comfortable, refined even, and worlds away from the usual feel of an all-terrain commercial vehicle. Power steering, central door locking, engine immobiliser, driver's and passenger's airbags and tinted windows all make this feel

more like a luxury car than a working pickup. Meanwhile the driving position lets you and everyone else know exactly who is in charge. From behind the wheel you're looking down on most other motorists with a clear view of the road ahead. Next is the space. Even with the extra

long load bed, there's still bags of room for a four-man crew and their equipment inside. It's like the Tardis —but much better looking.

And there's a hidden surprise, too. A secret storage box, revealed by popping up one of the rear seat bases, is ideal for storing your tools and valuables. No surprises, though, to discover that the L200 is engineered to take you just about anywhere you want to go. The massive air scoop on the bonnet gives the game away that there's a real animal under the bonnet. The 2.5-litre charge-cooled turbodiesel engine packs a knock-out punch and there's even the option of Mitsubishi's dealerfit Power Upgrade Pack option for the power mad. Priced at £595 (ex-VAT and labour) it boosts power from the standard 115hp at 4,000rpm to 138hp at 4,100rpm. At the same time torque rises from 240Nm at 2000rpm

for the standard engine to 274Nm at 3,100rpm. Mitsubishi's EasySelect driveline means you

can switch to and from two and four-wheel drive without stopping; you can also choose between two 4WD modes to suit differing operating conditions.

So just about nothing is going to stop you, including the price — great value at just £12,999 (ex-VAT, on the road).

Throw in a three year, 100,000-mile warranty, six-year anti-corrosion perforation warranty, and three-year pan-European breakdown recovery and it's easy to see why the L200 Club Cab is a package that everyone is so keen to pick up.
