want to take a look at the rest of this giant construction show. Here we check out

some of the highlights...

SED is now in its 38th year and has come a long way since its modest beginnings where muck-shifters were the foremost exhibit. It is now widely known as the national event for the whole of the construction industry, with the largest assembly of plant, tools, equipment and accessories available in one place in the UK.

Excavator specialist Kobelco is represented by Molson which will be showing a range of excavators from the current Kobelco line-up. The smallest in the stable is the micro-mini SKO9SR at just 950kg, ranging up to the mini SK455R at 4,790kg. The Bobcat display will be bigger and better than ever, says the company, including the very latest in compact loaders, mini-excavators, telehandlers, compactors, compressors and attachments. With a maximum digging depth of 3,066mm, the new Bobcat 430 zerotail-swing mini-excavator is said to be the first to feature an all-hydrostatic drive system,

resulting in more torque, precise manoeuvring and smooth acceleration.

After 25 years in the southern hemisphere Kanga Loaders, the designer of the world's first stand-on mini or compact skid-steer loader, has finally launched its product in the UK. Live demonstrations will show the versatility of the models available, from the rubber tracked TK 216 to the Kanga Kid micro model and attachments for nearly every application. Kubota's KX range is the latest development in mini-excavator design. The KX range is a particularly compact machine which is designed for restricted sites in urban areas and

allows work to be done on the roadside without disruption to traffic flow. Models range in weight from 850-7,500kg.

For compaction equipment, mini-excavators and tracked carriers visit Amman Equipment and look out for Ernest Doe who is exhibiting machinery from Fiat Kobelco, Hyundai, New Holland Construction, Barford, Manitou, Komatsu Utility and other major manufacturers. To check out the Case product range visit CRMS.

JCB will launch five new models on the UK market at this year's SED. A 13-tonne tracked excavator model, the JS130, is said to offer operators more power, performance, efficiency and lower operating costs. The smallest backhoe loader JCB has ever built, The minibackhoe, is aimed particularly at electrical, plumbing, building, groundcare, gardening and landscaping contractors. The new 8080 Midi Excavator competes in the 7-8 tonne market. Targeting plant hirers, the 8080 will be attractive to major sectors of the construction market. The 722 Articulated

Dump Truck features patented self-levelling front suspension. It is highly manoeuvrable and can operate in the most difficult conditions.

To match the impressive array of mini-excavators there are mini-dumpers at SED too, which can also get in and out of the most awkward areas. Thwaites is celebrating 60 years of dumper innovation with the launch of the new 1 Tonne Hi-Tip. This is the smallest four-wheeldrive dumper yet produced by Thwaites; it features hydrostatic drive, automotive controls and the ability to tip into a builders skip.

Manitou, which claims it is the world's number one in rough terrain handling, offers a variety of solutions for the construction market with an extensive range of telescopic loaders. New for SED 2004 is the Manihoe, a unique backhoe loader with a telescopic front-end enabling the user to lift, shift and dig. A brand new flagship Roto leads the product line-up on the Merlo stand. Merlo was the first to introduce slewing handlers back in 1991 and still claims world leadership in this sector. The Roto 40.25 lifts to 25m and features a tilting-cab

module for increased driver vision at height. It also offers continuous turret rotation, sliding stabilisers, AutoRide suspension and a travelling speed of 40km/h.

Also at SED 2004 will be the Panoramic range of rigid chassis handlers, including the 17m P40.17K that is rapidly establishing itself as a leading high lift machine. Closer to ground level you'll find the Cingo tracked dumpers which are being shown with a UK high-tip skip for the first time. Cranes and Access Village

The cranes make an appearance at SED every two years and this year sees them back at the show. You can't miss them — just head towards the booms on the eastern edge of the show...

Spierings Kranen is once again at SED and this year it's showing two brand new cranes. The Mighty Tiny SK1265 AT6 will have its UK launch at Milton Keynes, while SK599 AT5 is also expected to debut. NRC Plant will be exhibiting the recently redesigned Hitachi Sumitomo SCX900-2 90-tonne-capacity hydraulic crawler crane.

Vanson Cranes is expecting to exhibit a self-erecting tower crane and a luffing jib tower crane. Partek Cargotec, owner of Moffet-Kooi, will be present in the Cranes & Access area where it will once again be hosting the Hiab Crane Challenge a competition where SED visitors can win cash and other prizes.

For van and truck-mounted aerial access platforms visit SkyKing Equipment and Versallift Distributors. EH Hassell & Sons has been appointed Sennebogen Cranes' distributor in the UK and Ireland. This year the company will be launching two brand new cranes. The first to make its UK debut is the unique Sennebogen G83 HD 80-tonnecapacity telescopic crawler crane. The second crane is making its world debut at SED 2004: visitors will not want to miss the 640 HD 50tonne-capacity lattice boom crawler cranes.
