A NEW award scheme to be launched later in the year will identify truck parks that comply with security recommendations. ParkMark-designated parks will have to meet criteria approved by the Association of Chief Police Officers.

The British Parking Association (BPA) will manage the scheme. Kelvin Reynolds, BPA director of technical services, says: "Although a few truck parks are included in the existing scheme, they have been assessed against the standards designed for the needs of cars. "Instead of have a one-size-fitsall set of guidelines, each site will now be assessed on the basis of the

risk attached to its particular location and the type of vehicles that are parking there.

"The risks may be different parking alongside a motorway service station to a site controlled by a port authority which has probably got its own controls in place anyway."

The scheme has won backing from the Home Office and is to begin operating frOm October.

ParkMark status will only be awarded to sites which undergo an initial security assessment followed by an inspection a year later. Further information about the scheme is available at vvww.securedcarparks.com or from the BPA on 01444 447314.
