• Aviemore timber haulier Donald Watt, who runs 34 HGVs, is leaving the industry in June after 15 years because he has never seen it "so desperate".
"I have become weary of the haulage environment and the problems we face, which do not just include fuel rates," he says. "I have taken a brave and prudent decision to get out now. Soon our customers will become tired or our constant trips to the rates negotiation rooms."
Watt's decision puts 40 jobs at risk. But he says the company is profitable with a strong bank balance, and he hopes to sell it.
• The jobs of 54 employees at Wigan-based haulier RN Rolton, part of the NWF group, are at risk following a decision to close its depot at the end of July.
Managing director Mike Guest says this is due to high fuel rates and the economic problems of a major customer
"We are trying to see how many jobs we can save," he says. But a large proportion will go."
