GREEN VIEW

I realise that the haulage industry may have greater concerns than the environment at present, but I thought I should respond to the letter from Colin Atkinson (CM18-24 March). We were obviously delighted to hear that the Government was prepared to reward environmentally friendly vehicles with a significant rebate on their Vehicle Excise Duty, as the Eminox/Johnson Matthew CRT is a simple way to qualify for this saving. For many years we have been working with both the public and private sector to develop environmental improvement programmes for their fleets, and have been advising many more organisations over the past couple of weeks, following the Budget announcement.

We have also been cooperating closely with the relevant organisations regarding the administration of the VED rebate scheme, and it can be acknowledged that the system is still in its infancy. It is, however, correct to say that the basic premise to qualify involves a vehicle progressing two Euro levels. The particulate limit set for a Euro-2 vehicle to obtain the rebate (0.08 g/kWh) has been based on the then proposed Euro-4 legislation. This reduction is easily achievable with CRT technology.

Vehicles fitted with CRT have been through rigorous independent testing in order to gain approval for the scheme and have consistently achieved results 90% below the limit specified for qualification. We can also assure you that the CRT is a proven and mature product, with many of the 4,000 currently in operation on trucks, buses and trains across Europe having completed hundreds of thousands of kilometres of service. We should be happy to discuss any concerns in detail, and share the experience and independent data with any customer who wishes to contact us on 01427 810088.

The Freight Transport Association has recently issued a useful diagram illustrating the procedure involved in gaining the VED rebate, which no doubt many of your readership have already received.

Mike Galey, Company secretary, Em/flax.
