He said he had been advist by hauliers that in order I recover any particularl excessive costs being incurrt by delays to vehicles at Roy Seaforth, they had no alterru tive but to impose this su charge last Sunday.
Some hauliers, he said, ha been losing about £1,000 week because of the dela3 arising apparently from plat breakdowns. Drivers als complained that they had t queue for up to seven hours t deliver containers, and rejoi the queue and wait anoth( seven hours to collect.
Mr Alcock warned that tF road haulage surcharge vw just another nail in the port coffin, and would encourag users to start looking ft cheaper ports. "The mw important thing now is to gi the productivity rate up. It still poor compared with °tilt ports," he said.
Mersey Docks and Harbou Company considers the roa haulage surcharge "quit unnecessary" and appealed t hauliers to "speedily remov it."
A spokesman said that whil there had been problems ow equipment breakdowns at th terminal these were rapidl being overcome. Some repa work had been held up owin to delay in obtaining spar parts from manufacturer The necessary spares wer now being delivered and fitte when the surcharge wa announced.
The spokesman said it wo anticipated that last weeken there would be a big improvt ment in the availability of th plant and equipment.
