Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A CENSUS taken in London last 1-I• year by the Metropolitan and City Police showed that, in two years, traffic had increased by 7 per cent. Excluding cycles, the growth in traffic was 10,3 per cent.

The census was taken at 116 comparable points from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on a day in July.

Between 1952 and 1954, the number of private, cars increased by 19.5 per cent.: of light commercial vehicles by 6.4 per cent.; of heavy commercial vehicles by 17.2 per cent., and of coaches by 8.2 per cent. There was, however, a reduction of 6 per cent. in the number of motorbuses, and of 1.5 per cent, in trolleybuses.

Hyde Park Corner continued to be London's busiest traffic point, with Trafalgar Square second and Marble Arch third.

SHELL-MEX SET-UP CHANGED

Scottish Oils and Shell-Mex, Ltd., now have a branch at Ayr under the managership of Mr. W. S. Gow, and at Inverness under Mr. A. Murray.

FUEL COSTS HAVE FALLEN

SINCE restrictions on the price of petrol were removed in 1953, the cost of Esso regular grade has been reduced by led. a gallon, whilst Autodiesel fuel has dropped Id. a gallon. Petrol in this country., without tax, is the third cheapest in Europe. Only in Belgium and Holland is it cheaper, and only by less than id. a gallon.

This was stated by Mr. J. L. N. Pollock, director of the Esso Petroleum Co., Ltd., when he spoke last week at the opening of the company's new llm.-gallon distribution depot at Eastern Dock, Dover Harbour.

1936 BUS HEADS PARADE

HEADING a parade of new DaimlerCrossley buses in Aberdeen last week was a 1936 COG.6 model which has covered 750,000 miles. It has been certified for another 21years service.

The city has taken delivery of 15 Daimlers, Another 20 have been ordered. Aberdeen's fleet now numbers 195 vehicles, of which 164 are Daimler models, 144

New Lighting Rules Being Made

REGULATIONS are being made by the Minister of Transport to relax the law on the lighting of vehiclesparked at night. Apart from private cars and some other vehicles, only goods vehicles not exceeding 30 cwt. unladen and hackney carriages adapted to carry fewer than eight passengers will benefit from the concessions.

In London, a vehicle will be allowed to be parked in the streets at night with parking lights so long as the road is. subject to a speed limit and the vehicle is within 100 yd. of a street lamp. No lights will be required on such a road if the vehicle is parked within 25 yd.

Outside London there will be similar arrangements, but parking without lights will be subject to the permission of the chief officer of police.

NEW JOINT SERVICE?

AS forecast in The Commercial Motor on April 22, Liverpool Transport Department, St. Helens Transport Department and Ribble Motor Services, Ltd., have now applied to the North Western Licensing Authority to run a new joint service from St. Helens to Southdene. Each of the applicants will withdraw its original application if this

new joint service is granted.

LAST year's report of the British Transport Commission is expected to he issued before the end of June.

The Minister of Transport is due to receive the half-yearly report of the Road Haulage Disposal Board later this month.

MORE ACCIDENTS IN BUSES? 'THE Minister of Transport is to ask I the Departmental Committee on Road Safety to investigate an apparent increase in the number of accidents to passengers falling inside public service vehicles.
