ROAD PLANNING FOR SPEED THE desirability or otherwise of plan' ning roads to take advantage of the mechanical development in vehicles which made higher speeds possible needed examination, said Mr. E. W. H. Vallis, county, surveyor of Kent, in a paper . on "The Planning of Roads," which he read to the Royal Society of Arts in London on Wednesday.

Pointing out that the attainment of high speed by forms of transport other than by road was applauded, Mr. Vallis submitted that that should not obscure the desirability of attaining high speeds on long road journeys, provided that it could be done with safety.

Most accidents occurred on roads unfitted for present-day traffic. "These roads are in no way comparable with the dual-carriageway motor roads which are now contemplated, and roads of this modern type, whose design is founded upon all the accumulated technical knowledge and skill which are now available, can justifiably be planned for speeds considerably higher than those to which we are accustomed today," he added.

PPLICATIONS by a number of 4-1. East Midland operators to run summer express services from places in Nottinghamshire to North Wales holiday resorts will not be decided until after the holiday season.

This was made known when William Truman Co. applied to run from Warsop to Rhyl. The East Midland Licensing Authority said that the applications were considered to be of such importance that it would be unfair to reach a decision before other parties had been heard. As it was not possible to consider other applications before September, decisions would be reserved until then.

Objections were lodged by Eat Midland Motor Services, Ltd., Barton Transport, Ltd., and the Midland General Omnibus Co., Ltd. Local branches of the National Union of Mineworkers supported the Truman concern.
