• Norbert Dentressangle, the French haulier which had planned a tenfold expansion by the turn of the century, is making drivers redundant.

The previously bullish French firm says the volte-face is due to changing market conditions and the need to cut costs.

At its C.-K base in Fareham 17 drivers were laid off last Friday: the company plans to lay off 11 chemical tanker drivers in Widnes. Ray McCord, managing director of Norbert Dentressangle Holdings, says the tanker job losses are due to a shortage of work in the sector.

The redundancies at Fareham are because ND is planning to save money by sending unaccompanied trailers to the Continent in place of the driveraccompanied service.

McCord says that changing market conditions will affect ND's long-term expansion plans: "Things aren't easy at the moment," he says. "We had to take these measures to keep up our quality of service and price effectiveness."
