Seabridge Marine, which is understood to have access to a 155-lorry, 3,400-tonne Brittany Ferries cross-Channel vessel, has announced plans for a north/south route, running initially between Oben and Stornoway, with slightly cheaper rates for lorries than the Caledonian MaoBrayne Ullapool-Stornoway crossing.
It would use ferry terminals operated at present for CalMac services, and would run three days a week. At a later stage, the services would be extended southwards to Islay, Gourock and Larne in Northern Ireland.
The company says that a ninemetre lorry wourd pay E320.80 for the Stornoway crossing, against £328.50 for CalMac's route, and in addition it would use less fuel and be less affected by the eight-hour driving day.
