ON Monday an assembly plant for Leyland vehicles and diesel engines was opened in Iran by the Iranian Prime Minister. Operating under the name of Leyland Motors Iran Co., the plant is located on a 24-acre site in Teheran and has a main assembly building covering 27,000 sq. ft., a storage building of 11,000 sq. ft. and an administration block and other buildings.

Initial production of vehicles is estimated at 1,000 a year, with 150 employees, but it has been designed for an eventual production figure of 2,400 vehicles a year. Mr, J. McHugh, director and chief engineer of Leyland Motors. and Mr. B. C. Baker, commercial manager of the Leyland Motors Corporation, attended the opening ceremony and whilst there Mr. McHugh is examining local operating conditions and discussing design aspects of vehicles for the market. Mr. Baker is negotiating with the Iranian Government on future imports.
