A LTHOUGH the express services 1-1 applied for by Buckmaster Garages, Ltd., Leighton Buzzard, from Aylesbury to Glasgow, have been refused by the Traffic Commissioners for the East Midland, Eastern and Metropolitan areas, it. is understood that a further application to cover the peak holiday periods would be considered on its merits. In a separate decision, the East Midland Commissioners stated that should any grant be made in the other two areas, they would be prepared to consider a backing application covering the portion of the route lying between the Eastern and Yorkshire areas. An application for an excursion licence covering the same route was refused at the original hearing in Luton (The Commercial Motor, January 30).

LTHOUGH East Yorkshire Motot 1-1. Services, Ltd., have made great strides in the past 25 years, the company arc at present passing through a difficult period. This was stated by Mr. A. F. R. Carling, managing director, when he presented long-service awards to 15 employees. He recalled that 25 years ago the annual mileage was 5,500,000, whereas the fleet now covered over 9,000,000 miles a year. The number of passengers had risen in the same period from 11,000,000 to over 31,000,000 annually. "These figures of expansion have not been the picture of the past two years," he added. 'There has been a period of slight contraction and consolidation but, personally. I am an optimist. I think that the management are optimists and we can expect to go forward again."

MAGISTRATE'S WARNING

rAA NEWCASTLE haulage company was warned at Stockton County Magistrates' Court, last week, about the way its drivers changed over al Billingham. Mr. D. M. Scott, presiding, said the practice of leaving lorry doors unlocked could lead to serious trouble, and he suggested that McPhee's (Newcastle), Ltd., should take note. Maurice Newman, one of the company's drivers, was fined IL with 9s. costs, for parking a lorry without lights at Billingham during a change-over.

ROOM ASSEMBLY IN S.A.

OOTES commercial vehicles and cars sare to be assembled in South Africa by Stanley Motors and distributed throughout the Union. An agreement between the two companies was announced last week. Work will begin next month.
