PRELIMINARY and exploratory discussions are taking place between the Rover Co., Ltd., and the Standard Motor Co., Ltd., to discover whether there is any way in which the two companies can "help one another." A joint statement along these lines was issued last week by

• the two concerns, following MasseyFerguson's announcement that they do not intend to renew Standard's contract for the production of tractors. Negotiations for an amalgamation between Rover and Standard took place five years ago, but were allowed to lapse.

TAX HARDSHIP NOTED

THE difficulties of the road passenger transport industry because of high taxation had been pointed out to him. said Mr. F. J. Erroll, Economic Secretary to the Treasury, in the House of Commons last week, but it was not possible to anticipate the Budget statement. Dr. H. N. King (Lab., Itchen) had asked if "serious note" could be given to-. the " crippling " taxation burden which had to be passed on to passengers.
