OVER 150 persons attended the lectureture given by S.T.R., The Commercial Motor costs expert, under the auspices of A.R.O., at Newcastle, on Tuesday. S.T.R. broke all records for his lecture programme and for any meeting of hauliers ever held in Newcastle. Mr. H. Wilkinson took the chair. Amongst those present were the following :—

MerFars. C. M. CaumbelL clerk to the Northern Licensing Authority; Prior Allen, Traffic Commissioner; LE Currie Blakey, C.M.U.A. local secretary and secretary of Newcastle and District Road Transport Employers' Association; several members of Newcastle Chamber of Commerce; and two L.N.E.R. officials.

Mr. Campbell declared that the address " had thrown a flood of light on the subject of road haulage and its economic aspects." What he had heard that evening would, in the future, be of assistance to the Licensing Authority.

Last week, S,T,R.• also lectured to Grimsby and District Motor Transport Association, a " live " independent organization, with a membership of upwards of about 120. About 40 of these members, with a sprinkling of non-members, attended the meeting. According to a Lincolnshire transport authority, there are only about 70 hauliers within easy reach of Grimsby.

The audience listened with every attention, even going so far as to demand a temporary pause while those who had no notepaper available could be provided with some on which to make notes.

Amongst the questions raised during a keen discussion were those of the amount of establishment charges which an owner-driver might have to meet, the fallacy of looking upon hirepurchase charges as the equivalent of depreciation, maintenance and interest on first cost.

The meeting was under the chairmanship of Mr. F. Crashley, of Sowerby

and Co., Ltd. Mr. AlIott disclosed the fact that operators in the district valued The Commercial Motor Tables of Operating Costs highly and worked closely to them.
