" IF there he no material improvement between now and the date when your licences come up for renewal, I shall not hesitate, in the interest of public safety, to suspend or revoke your licences." This warning was given to an applicant by Mr. W. Charnberlain, North-Western Licensing Authority, at a sitting in Liverpool, last week.

When an applicant sought the renewal, without modification. of his 13 licences for 10 vehicles of 171 tons unladen_ weight, Mr. Chamberlain adopted, for the first time, the proce dure of caning a vehicle examiner to give evidence concerning the condition of the applicant's vehicles.

The examiner said that the machines had been in an extremely poor condition, but an improvement had been shown recently. The applicant seemed to have no method of dealing with the maintenance of his fleet, except when the condition of the vehicles was brought to his notice.

The applicant replied that, whenever vehicles were placed under prohibition, they were repaired to the satisfaction of the examiner.
