Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

IN view of the large numbers of ex W.D. lorries which are employed in this -country, the Shard tipping gear is of particular interest, as it is designed to convert any such vehicles' into end-tipping wagons.

It is a twin vertical-screw type, hind. operated, and provided with a ratchetcontrolled winding shaft to prevent back running. At each screvebase is fitted a Hoffmann ball thrust washer which, by reducing friction, reduces the tipping effort to a minimum.

. One of the features of the gear is the stout sub-frame. Most heavy lorry bodies will be badly strained if tipped from one end while holding a load of from four to six tons. This is the reason why a subframe is necessary. In the Shard this frame is --constructed tof channel steel of 6-in. by 2-in. section and pivoted to brackets attached to the chassis side members. The utilization of this subframe also ensures; easy fitting of the tipping gear, the body-being removed and then bolted direct to the sob-frame as if this were the chassis.

The Iprice of the sub-frame is £5 5s., B40 whilst the gear for loads of from three to six tons costs £30 complete with all fittings. A smaller gear to carry 30 cwt. is also marketedThis is priced at L25. S.E.

The makers are the Shard Ckaninereial Motor Garage, la, Shards Square, Peckham Park Road, Old Kent Road, London,
