Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

WE recently attended a demonstration of the TlfOrpe portable axle-thread cutting tool at. the repair works of J. I. Thornyeroft and Co., Ltd. The device in question,is made by 3. and P. Bevan, of Clarence Terrace, Swansea. The tool consists of a long central spindle carrying what might be termed an adjustable ferrule or spigot, which fits into the open end of the axle tube. On this spigot is a screwed collar, and in front of the collar are three keys in sloping keyways, so arranged that as the collar is screwed up the keys are driven up the inclines and are thus caused to grip.the interior surface of the axle, tube.

The nobler 'for the cutting tool is 17shaped, and also carries the handles by which the tool is rotated. This holder is tapped to suit the outer thread on the central spindle and can be locked firmly en to this by means of two nuts. The other end of the spindle is cut with 10 threads to the inch, either left or righthanded, according to the thread which

• is required on the axle shaft. Thus as the cutter is revolved the central spindle, working in the ferrule acts as a transverse. The cutting tool is also provided with an adjustment, and if necessary the old thread can be turned off by the fitting a special cutter into the holders usually, however, this is found to i be u nnecessary.

The device, complete with spanners, high-speed turning and screw cutting tools and chaser, is priced at £15, and with it a perfect thread can easily be cut on an average axle tube in undei one hour, and the job can be done in situ by simply removing the wheel. It is suitable for the following makes of vehicles :—Dennis' Mandslay, Thorny-croft, Caledon, Straker-Squire, Pagefield, Commer Car 3P, Karrier, etc., and although the standard pitch is 10 threads per inch, other pitches can be supplied.
