• The Department of Transport and police are reviewing the way they gather information on wheel loss, says Transport Minister Steven Norris. It is believed that the department will change the way it collates accident statistics to include wheel loss incidents for the first time.

Research by Birmingham motorway police has revealed 25 wheel loss incidents over the past year on the 75 miles of motorway they cover including the M6, parts of the M5 and M42.

Birmingham motorway policeman Ray Pitt has also been given the go-ahead by the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) to carry out research and collate figures into the number of people killed in wheel-loss accidents nationally. In The case against a Birmingham haulier involved in a fatal accident nearly two years ago was adjourned by Bakewell Magistrates Court, Derbys last week.

Shuttlehurst Co of Wharf Road, Tyseley, in Birmingham appeared in court to answer a number of charges including operating without an 0-licence or insurance, and using a trailer to which the braking system was not properly adjusted.

The rase was adjourned until 19 July for solicitors to examine witness statements.
