DESIGNED for fast long-distance meat haulage, a Rowe Hillmaster 8-ton chassis, recently completed for the Cornish Meat Transport Co., is the firstto be fitted with an A.E.C. AV470 oil engine.
This 7.75-litre power unit producing 1131, b.h.p. at 2,000 r.p.m. is mounted in combination with an A.E.C. five-speed gearbox with synchromesh engagement of all gears except first and reverse, -which are sliding mesh. This larger engine does not obtrude farther into the cab than other units fitted previously, allowing a low engine cowling line.
An Eaton 18500 two-speed axle is employed for the final drive. The combination of a more powerful engine than normal and a transmission system giving 10 forward speeds ensures that the vehicle will be equally at home on the hilly terrain of Cornwall or on fast trunk haulage. Air-pressure-assisted brakes are fitted to cater for the increased performance.
The spacious cab has curved front quarter lights and a plastics roof. Additional equipment fitted by the operator includes a heater and a radio.
