Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

ALREADY operating a 2d. minimum single fare and requiring another 1500,000 a year to meet increased costs, Birmingham Corporation has applied for new variations involving complete reorganization of the fare stages. The proposals are that all routes be divided into stages averaging about 5/8 mile each.

Ordinary single fares will be based on 2d. for two stages, 3d. for four, 4d. for six, 5d. for eight and 6d. for 11. This will result in many .passengers travelling at the same fare as previously, whilst others will be able to travel further at the original rate. The email--cation is expected to be heard in the middle ofJuly.

Having applied in January for higher charges, the Midland General Omnibus Co., Ltd., Nottingham, and the Mansfield District • Traction Co., Ltd., Mansfield, have now been given permission to increase fares as applied for with slight variations. In the case of Midland General, the exceptions apply to journeys wholly on the trolleybus routes of Notts and Derbys Traction Co., Ltd., whilst in the case of Mansfield District, permission to raise one workmen's fare to lid. has been withheld.

As a result of this decision, single fares of 31d., 41d. and 6d. will go up by Id., and those thereafter by ld. Ordinary return fares from 6d.-9c1. go up by Id., and over 10d. by 2d. Workmen's fares will now he based on the new single fare plus 334 per cent. Thirty-six services operated by Mansfield District and 80 by Midland General are affected.

East Midland Motor Services, Ltd., has received permission to raise charges on 54 services operated in the Yorkshire Traffic Area. The proposal to withdraw season tickets has been turned down, but new monthly and three-monthly contract rates have been authorized. Ordinary return fares of 6d., 7d.. 8d. and 9d. now go up by Id. and return tickets over 10d. will cost 2d. more. Workmen's fares will in future be equal to the single fare plus a half, with a minimum of 4d.

Lincoln Corporation, having twice put a case for higher charges, has now received permission to advance fares on 21 services. All adult single fares will now go up by id., weekly tickets will go up by 331 per cent., and additional weekly tickets will be introduced. The children's id. fare is abolished.

In accordance with recommendations made by the Central Fares Committee, the Metropolitan Licensing Authority has published proposals permitting those operators who did not increase charges in January on express services starting in London by 6! per cent., following the decision to this effect, to do so now.

The application of Eastbourne Corporation to raise rates on 10 routes is to be heard by the South-eastern Licensing Authority on June 25.
