FINANCFAL POSITION DLSCUSSED
THE serious financial position of the bus undertaking was discussed by Coventry •Transport Committee this week. Last year's operations resulted in
a net loss of £9,127. Receipts had increased by about £83,000 but working expenses were up by approximately £140.000. !
The committee considered a resolution from the Federation of Coventry Ratepayers' and Residents' 'Associations asking whether efficiency might be improved by taking expert assistance from an outside source.
• . NEW TUBE BENDER
BECAUSE of difficulties in obtairt:ng exhaust systems for certain makes of vehicle, Chamberlain Industries. Ltd., Staffa Road, London, E.10, was requested to design a machine capable of bending light-gauge steel tubes. The company has now added a suitable accessory to its range of Hydrorarn equipment.
Bends may be commenced from within I in. of the end of the tube and continued to 180 degrees. Working on the ratchet principle, one complete stroke of the arm provides a bend of 60 degrees, three operations being necessary to complete a semi-circle.
COMPENSATION DECISIONS
TH E Transport Arbitration Tribunal, 1 sitting in London this week, fixed the compensation for Messrs. Bell's Transport Services at £55,000, also Till's Transport, Ltd:. at £53,300, and Eclipse Transport Services (Manchester), Ltd.. at £56,750. Ma. J. R. BROOKM AN is 10 retire from .the managership of British Road Services (Chaplin's), Town Station, Yeovil.
MR: F. A. STEPNEY ACRES, AiLIMEcti.E.. has retired from Vauxhall Motors, Ltd., and is open to accept work of a consultative or other technical nature.
MR. T. WILLIAMS haS retired frotn-the' traffic managership of the Workington iron and Steel Co., 'Ltd., a position has held for 17 years. Ile joined the concern in 1995.
MR. ARNOLD WATSON has been elected to the board of C. C. Wakefield and Co.,'Ltd. Ile joined the company in 1929 and has been general manager of Castrol sales for the past four years.
Ma. W. R. NIEL AND, who has been service manager of the Ford Motor Co., Ltd., since 1938, has been appointed. assistant general sales manager (domestic). He is sueceeded by Ma. S. W.
SANDERMAN.
Ma. GEOFFREY HARDING, at present an assistant test engineer of Birmingham Transport Department, has been appointed assistant engineer of Halifax Transport Department. He was previously "with the • Road Haulage Executive. _ _ MR. S. J. B. SKY RME, formerly chief engineer of East Midlands Motor Services, Ltd.. Chesterfield, has been appointed chief engineer of the North Western Road Car Co.. Ltd. He succeeds Ma. H. S. Dadvmt, who is taking up an appointment in Australia.
MR, A. W. FIELDER, deputy general manager of Portsmouth Transport Department, has accepted an invitation to become a vice-president of the Institute of Traffic Administration on relinquishing the office of honorary treasurer, which he has held for the past six years.
MR. E. H. R. SCHMIDT has been appointed manager, and Ma. W. F. Tnompsofq, assistant manager, of the new tyre sates development department of the Avon India Rubber Co., Ltd. A depot-organization department has been opened at Alelksham with MR. H. Waal AND as manager: MR. F. Go_nrar has become chairman of the Metropolitan section of The Institute of Transport. The immediate past chairman is MR. G. F. SINCLAIR. Ma. G. H. SEARLE. MR. J. W. S. BRANCK ER and MR. A. J. WEBB are vice-chairmen. MR. A. R. PARSELLE is honorary treasurer and MR. C. F. KING honorary secretary.
SAFETY WEEK T HIS year, the Ministry of Transport. 1 announces, national road safety week will take place from August 2-9. Local authorities have been advised of this and that the theme of the week's campaign is to be safe driving.
