This census will Cover all retailers, wholesalers, caterer's. motor traders and service traders in Berkshire, Aberdeenshire, Merionethshire, Liverpool, Aldershot, Barnard-Castle, Bootle, BridgendtChester, ChorleY. Crook, Halifax. Jarrow, Kidderminster. Oxford, Rugby, Skegness, Skelmersdale,'Stafford, Swansea, Taunton, Weymouth, High Wycombe, Galashiels, Oban, Bristol (wholesalers' activities only), and Manchester (some merchant converters and job and feat traders only).

These areas were not chosen at ran-, dorn, says the Board of Trade, but were carefully. selected to afford eXpericnee of the problems which may arise in different parts.of the country.

The forms for the pilot census, which wilt be sent to traders for completion in the early part of 1948, will contain cer tain questions with regard to the week beginning next Sunday (June 15-21).

Traders in the areas concerned ale asked to keep a record of the following information next week:— (1) Numbers of full-time employees, showing males and females and those under 18 and over 18, separately, and numbers of part-time employees; (2) total wages payable to eaeh group, in cluding commission, but before deduc

tion of tax, etc.; (3) number of employees, who normally earn over £10

a week and the total paid to them for the week;_ (4) numbers and types of delivery vehicle in use during the week, and the number of staff employed on delivery.

• Next week has been chosen as being, on the whole, is reasonably typical week. not too greatly affected by seasonal variations, The pilot census applies only to traders in the selected areas. It is being held as a preliminary to the first full census of distribution, which is now planned to take place in 1950 in respect of 1949.
