Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

MANY MLTNICIPAL authorities have proved beyond a shadow of doubt that the motor-propelled gully or cesspool emptier possesses numerous advantages over the old carting methods of dealing with work of this character. It is seldom, however, that one is in a position to obtain statistical information giving comparisons between the old and the new methods, and it is for this reason that we feel "sure our readers will peruse the running costs of the Dennis cesspool emptier in the service of the Borough of Chopping Wycombe with considerable interest.

The vehicle was put into service in August of last year, and Mr. T. J. Rushbrooke, M.Inst. M. and Cy.E., has recently furnished a statement giving the running costs of the vehicle during the first eight months of its service. From the running costs, details of which we publish herewith, it will be seen that the Dennis emptier has effected a saving over the former method of carting of £481 18s. 9d. during this period, or at the rate of more than £720 per annum, after making liberal allowances for petrol, insurance, taxation and other overhead charges. In other words, the machine will have paid for itself in a period of two years.

As-a result of the saving of time which . Mr. Rushbrooke has been able to effect in carrying out the work by motor vehicle, the Dennis machine is not now fully occupied, but he is entering into engagements for emptying the cesspool of the rural district council, and to deposit the sewage on farm land through a small-diameter hose. The profit resulting from this supplementary use of the vehicle will go to increase the saving shown in Mr. Rushbrooke's statement, so that the results so far achieved cannot be considered otherwise than highly satisfactory from the financial point of view, quite apart from the fact that the system possesses indisputable advantages over the horse-drawn method, not the least of which is that the work is carried out in -a much more hygienic manner. We publish below illustrations of the 750-gallon tank mounted on a 4-4-ton Dennis chassis which is in the service of the Corporation of Chepping Wycombe. Dennis Bros., Ltd., pay special attention to the requirements of municipalities, and have recently delivered a cesspool emptying machine to the TRban District Council of Egharn and the Rural District Council of Cookham, which embraces Maidenhead.
