Mobile operating theatres

Located near Colchester, A Smith Great Bentley (ASGB) is active in a number of areas including outside broadcast and hospitality units, but its most exciting products these days are mobile operating theatres. ASGB is the exclusive supplier of mobile medical facilities to Vanguard Healthcare, part of Nuffield Hospitals. It has the world's largest fleet of mobile operating theatres, and its primary role is providing temporary back-up facilities to the NHS. It claims to have helped remove more than 55,000 patients from hospital waiting lists.

Its units fall into three basic types, operating theatres, recovery rooms, which can be independent or linked to the theatres, wards and out-patient units. The operating theatres are generally mounted integrally on semi-trailer chassis, which ASGB buys in, while the other types are usually demountable modular units. Units can be delivered onsite in the UK and Ireland next day, for periods ranging from one day to five years. Set-up takes from one to three hours, and all units can be supplied fully staffed if required.

The operating theatres come ready to hook up to three-phase electrics, telephones and drainage, with an onboard back-up power supply and full airfiltration system. The cost of these units can be up to 2500,000 each -and that's before the specialist medical kit is installed.
