RESIDENTS attempts co block an increase in the number of lorries operated from a Surrey distribution depot have been thrown out by the Metropolitan Licensing Authority, but limited conditions have been imposed.

Surrey County Council, two borough councils and environmental representors opposed plans by NFT Distribution (CM, June 8) to add 20 lorries and 10 trailers to the 22 vehicles already licensed to operate from its Chobham depot.

But apart from limiting the number of authorised vehicles at the depot at any time to 36 — the maximum number there at present — and insisting that none of the vehicles on the operator's licence should be parked on the public highway, LA Anthony Robertson has granted the company's application.

He said that many of the environmental representations were about the suitability of Chobham's roads for heavy goods vehicles and not about the NFT depot.

"In short, the local view is that most of Chobhani village should be regarded as being in the vicinity of the operating centre," Mr Robertson commented.

But he said it was for the highway and planning autho rities to resolve traffic problems, not for the LA.

He disregarded representations from residents living half a mile and three quarters of a mile from the depot. He also over-ruled representations from six others nearer the depot as they confined their complaint to two roads being unsuitable for use by heavy goods vehicles.

Mr Robertson ruled the additional vehicles would result in no degree of material change which from sheer scale would adversely affect the environment in the vicinity.

Accordingly, he could not reject the NFT application.
