He had dived in retirement for some time, but for many years took a prominent part in the affairs of the industry, doing much to shape it and create a national instead of local concept. He took part in wage negotiations so far back as 1911, and helped to promote a uniform scale for war-wage increases in the road-transport industry in 1918. In the same year be convened a conference of local organizations, which eventually resulted in the setting up, in 1921, of the National Road Transport Employers' Federaticin. He was president of this until 1926. He was a founder-member of the Institute of Transport and ,3 member of its first council.
