Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

. A Machine which is Equipped to Perform a Variety of Tasks.

"A WAGON of many purposes." That is the description that may be aptly applied to the Leyland generalutility tower wagon in the service of the Salford Corporation Tramways Department. Probably there is no other motor vehicle in the employ of the department that has such an elastic range of service or is employed under such rigorous conditions of service.

The plant it incorporates is :—(1) Maintenance and construction equipment for dealing with overhead system ; (2) reel for the running of overhead trolley wire; (3) electric compressor and receiver for spray-painting purposes; (4) electric welding plant complete, for metal electrodes and carbon arc ; (5) electric grinder for grinding rail after welding.

The tower wagon is, of course, in use throughout the year for the maintenance of the overhead tramway equipment during the daytime. During the 13 weeks of the holiday season, however, it is diverted from this task and is used for painting tramway standards.

When necessary the wagon is used on Saturday nights for the erection of trolley wires. The electric welding and grinding plants are used throughout the year on night work, with the exception of week-ends, when the vehicle is required for other work .(the erection of overhead wire).

This Leyland wagon is believed to be the only vehicle of its kind in the service of any tramway undertaking. Some corporations have adopted tower wagons to suit particular local conditions. The Liverpool Corporation, for instance, has a dual-purpose lorry which can be operated either on the road or on the tramway track, but the unit in the service of the Salford Corporation is, we believe, the only machine possessing so many distinctive spheres of usefulness. .

Electric power for driving the mechanism carried by the wagon is transmitted from the overhead supply line by means of a hooked pole (shown in one of our illustrations) and is earthed by placing a metal weight on the ground line.
