Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Prices slashed, old stock • cleared.., it's the January Sales! We've been searching for bargain priced 18-tonne curtainsiders...

e're in search of a truck with side access, acting as a haulier with new I work collecting and delivering pallets round our locality. Rather than setting a price limit, this time we simply set out to find the best wagon at the best price.

We note several 17-tonners on steel ;uspension but they're more than six years old ind we decide to give them a wide berth — hey 're too old and down a full tonne on )ayload. There are plenty of boxvans on offer n John Lewis colours and ex-rental plain xhite; again, not our cup of tea.

First up for closer consideration is a Renault ?remium 210.18 with a white sleeper cab and !6ft blue curtainsider body. It's a 2001 51-reg ruck that's covered more than 400,000km but s pretty clean inside and out. There's some ivery left on it but the franchised dealer says his will be removed, at least on the cab. It can )e outs for £18,500 (ex-VAT).

Weicheck our industry guides and it's not far I mm itecommended retail price. The dealer ays li can offer financing and starts talking [bout potential weekly costs—we cut him hort and tell him we'll call back.

Iveeo is always a good bet in these circumtances and sure enough we spot a few Cargos ittingiour description. We choose a 2000 W-reg 80E23 Cargo with a sleeper cab and 26ft blue body with tuckaway tail-lift. Is this the industry standard?

Again, mileage is high (more than 500,000km) but the franchised dealer assures us its age and mileage doesn't show." It'll be a worthwhile trip," he adds. This Cargo has been used to deliver pallets for a company distributing hazardous products nationwide, and all decals will be removed. It comes with 11 months' MoT and a three-month driveline warranty; they're asking fl 4500 (ex-VAT).

Pick 'n' mix

Next we check out the Scanias— they do a nice line in 18-tonners with the P-cab. A franchised dealer wants £18,000 (ex-VAT) for a sleepercabbed 220hp 2000/X-reg P94 with a 26ft body, finished in a tasteful red. Mileage, we are told, is industry average at around 400,000km.

Volvo is another strong performer at 18 tonnes and we find a bevy of examples. It takes just one call to find our potential purchase: an all-white 2000/X-reg FLE.This is the first we've found with a day cab; it also has a tail-lift and a 25ft body. A full service history is available from the independent franchised dealer. He's asking £14,750 (ex-VAT). which is certainly competitive, and it comes with low mileage.

The Germans have a lot to offer in this sector and we're soon tempted by an MAN 18.224 M2000 sleeper cab with a 27ft body. Advertised through an independent dealer it's a 2001/Y-reg Euro-2 model that's done less than 300,000km on local deliveries. The dealer tells us the mileage would have been even lower but the previous owner put in on night trunking for the last six months. which inevitably ramped up the mileage.

The price tag is £19,250 (ex-VAT) but he seems willing to negotiate following our silence after the price is mentioned. •
