Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

by, starting with 1905 and 1955. 1955

Emigration

"Since the Commercial Motor reported the statement of Mr HA Badenoch of Badenoch's Transport in Adelaide, Australia, that if he could find 10 good removals men in Britain he would take them back with him and build houses for them, numerous inquiries have been received at this office from men apparently taking him at his word... no doubt Mr Badenoch is now kept busy sorting applicants from hopeful emigrants."

Policing

"A special central traffic-control squad for London to deal with severe congestion is to be established... It will consist of 100 men with four cars and 38 motor cycles."

Technology

"Detergent oils and chromium-plated piston rings have extended cylinder life to double the pre-war length."

Unions

Following a railway strike "of locomotive men" a correspondent advised the government to "freeze the assets of the union concerned".The RHA chairman "urged that hauliers must be prepared to keep the lifeblood of the country flowing".

'Humour'

"It is usually the policemen. not the parker, who is nosey now"... -Plastics with a high alcoholic content can stand up to tropical conditions in which human beings similarly composed do not last long."

1905

Exports

THREE YEARS AFTER the bloody conclusion of the Boer War a correspondent suggested:-...there is no country in greater actual need of the commercial motor than our South African possession, but... there must be no"dumping" of unsuitable or obsolete stock, as has been too frequently the case in other lines of industry. Business done on sound commercial lines, with Colonial loyalty as an additional asset, will serve to strengthen the bond of Empire and to increase our National and Imperial prosperity"

Drivers

CM warned its readers: "To produce, out of the raw material, a competent driver for any commercial motor exceeding, say, two tons in weight unladen, will entail a cost of at least £100 before satisfactory results can be obtained...As a class of men for this kind of work the writer would suggest stokers retired from the Royal Navy"

Prospects

"A man can usefully invest £500 or £600 in a single motor wagon and, by personal services, secure a return of £250 a year from that capital sum."

Knorr-Bremse

Also in 19 January 1905 German pneumatic braking pioneer Georg Knorr found financial backing and set up a company called Knorr-Bremse in Berlin. For a while Knorr had shared factory space with Otto Lilienthal, who is remembered as one of the fathers of aeronautics.
